Vaping Technology for 2015 and Beyond

futureofvapingVaporization has been unanimously considered the healthiest, safest way to consume cannabis for a decade. The original “box vape” was developed by Vaporbrothers in 1999 but it wasn’t until the mid-2000s when the Storz & Bickel Volcano became popular that people began to take vaporization seriously. Since then, a series of revelations about medical marijuana have driven some major advancements in vapor technology leading to wide range of options being available to the consumer today. Here are a few of the more important ways that vapor technology has changed for the better:

Portability

Though there had been many attempts before, it wasn’t until a few years ago that we began to see truly portable, efficient dry-herb vaporizers make their way on to the market (thanks to a wider availability of lithium-ion batteries). Products like the Pax the Mighty (made by the same makers as the Volcano) and the Magic Flight Box have proven to be popular solutions for people looking to take vapor hits on the go. Both the Pax and the Mighty offer similar, high quality experiences but the Mighty offers a full-convection experience (only hot air comes in contact with the herb) making it bulkier.

Airflow

da budda vaporizerWith the popularity of convection vaporizers like the Volcano, it was only a matter of time before people become concerned with how airflow affected vapor flavor and strength. The electronics inside vaporizers (especially cheaper, Chinese-made models) let off small amounts of potentially toxic gas as the resins used for manufacture heat-up and degrade. Though most vaporizer companies ignore this in their design, the company 7th Floor from Colorado makes their vaporizers with heating element completely isolated from the electronics offering the cleanest, most efficient airflow possible. Da Budda and  Silver Surfer vapes are each made 100% in the U.S.A., can be custom designed, and feature a little hand-blown glass art making each one of a kind. They have a unit that’s been running constantly for almost 6 years that’s still going strong.

Dynamic Temperature Control

We know terpenes and other volatile compounds in cannabis have beneficial medicinal entourage effects so it’s only natural that a vaporizer would directly address a way to obtain the maximum benefits from these compounds. Many people set their vaporizers to a single temperature but in order to coax out the maximum number of terpenes without damaging them, it requires a dynamic range of temperatures… enter the Firefly. This vape uses a unique ‘dynamic convection’ heating system allowing the user to experience a full profile of volatiles through  slow, controlled heating. Not unlike performing a “frequency sweep” to determine the acoustics of a room, this could very well represent a practical way for consumers to analyze marijuana similarfirefly to how we appreciate wine.

As technology becomes cheaper and more integrated and marijuana use becomes more mainstream, we’re bound to see even more advancements in vapor technology. Until then, there are plenty of comprehensive options available to even the most discerning smoker… combustion is so 2000’s!

4 Vaporizer Pens for Oil and Wax: Best Buys

vape pens wax oilIn this day and age everything is becoming smaller and more convenient with the help of technology and hash smoking is no different! The “Wax Vape Pen” has come a long way since the introduction of the G Pen and with a seemingly endless number of options available to the consumer today, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the possibilities while trying to avoid cheap, poorly made pens that can be hazardous to your health.

That being said, many of the pens operate in a very similar fashion (passing a charge through a metal coil to create a heating element) so as long as you’re using a trusted supplier, the best pen for you will depend on your level of experience and your vaping preferences.

Stay Lit Vaporizer Kit

stay lit

If you’re just starting down the path of getting extremely relaxed on the go, the Stay Lit Vaporizer kit is an inexpensive but still high quality way to find yourself and figure out your vaporizing habits. It comes with 4 different attachments (including one for dry herb though it doesn’t work so great) so you can hit any consistency of full-melting concentrate from the most liquid oil to the must crumbly wax. Like most pens, it has a simple on-off push button operation and a locking mode so the battery doesn’t bleed off in your pocket.

Buttonless Vaporizer Pen

If you prefer to vape liquid oil or one of the many glycerinbuttonless vaporizer pen-suspended concentrates, buttonless vapes are the way to go. All you do is load on your pre-filled cartridge and puff away like a cigarette, it automatically turns on and starts vaporizing. It’s an elegant and discreet way to to get medicated.

Micro G Pen Vaporizer

micro g vaporizerIf you tend to stick to waxes and budders, the Micro G Pen offers one of the most reliable names in wax vape pens combines with the ultimate portability. The Micro G is roughly half the length of most other vape pens and though it has a shorter battery life, it has a healthy sized bowl and is even more discreet and convenient than the classic G pen. When stealth is your number 1 priority, this is what you’re looking for.

710 Vaporizer Pen ARK Kit

If the wax vape pen is your vaporization method of choice, then you’re going to want something a little more rugged and fine-tuned to suit your heavier use. The 710 Vaporizer Pen ARK kit contains both the original 710 Mini Battery and the 710 Nano Battery (one for home, one on the go) as well as liquid cartridges and glass domes for each. The large, metal bowls are of the highest quality and make hitting wax or shatter simple without having to worry about a wick. The glass dome ensures you won’t get that nasty “plastic” taste and makes it easy to see how cooked your bowl is (or if you’re spilling). 710-vaporizer-pen-ark-kitMost impressive though, is the heat up time. For so many metal components, these pens manage to heat up in a matter of seconds and the battery can easily last an entire day+ at a time with regular use (better than your smartphone!).

Whether you’re just starting out or you’re looking to upgrade your current setup, there’s bound to be a pen out there for you! Always remember to use a reliable source when purchasing a vaporizer!

The Vape Pen Primer

Pen-style vaporizers have been around since Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik first created the e – cigarette in 2003. Originally intended for tobacco use, vape pens have become all the rage in the marijuana industry. And for good reason, vapes are stealthier and healthier than smoking weed. They are also portable and very easy to use.

If you’ve considered purchasing a vape pen, but aren’t exactly sure where to start then this is a good read for you. So let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

vape penWhat is a Vape Pen?

A vaporizer pen is a hand-held, portable device used for inhaling nicotine, cannabis concentrate (wax, oil, dab), dry herb, or flavored oil vapor. Vapes are portable, battery powered, and usually pen shaped, hence the name “vape pen”.

How Do Vape Pens work?

Vape pens are made up of three basic parts; a mouthpiece, an atomizer (heating element), and rechargeable battery. There are a variety of portable vaporizers on the market today, but they all basically work the same. To use a vape pen, assuming that you are interested in vaporizing cannabis concentrates or dabs, you simply place your wax or oil in the chamber which connects to the atomizer, then press a button to start the heating process. The heating element heats up between 350-400 degrees just before the point of combustion, creating a vapor, which can then be inhaled.

Vaping is a Healthy Alternative to Smokingvaping smoking

What makes vaporizing so much healthier compared to smoking has a lot to do with the level of heat involved. For example, when you smoke a joint, you are directly igniting your weed with an open flame, which can get as hot as 1000 degrees. This process is called combustion. Combusting (burning) marijuana produces carcinogens. Also, smoke is just dirty, and is essentially soot which can irritate your lungs and cause shortness of breath, coughing and asthma. On the other hand, vaporizers use a process called conduction heating. Conduction is an indirect way of heating your cannabis concentrate, allowing your concentrate to become vapor rather than smoke. Vapor is a much cleaner than smoke, and has virtually none of the toxic compounds, carcinogens, and carbon monoxide associated with smoking weed.

Types of Vape Pens on the Market

There is an ever expanding variety of vape pens on the market these days that can be categorized into three basic types depending on the product used. These are wax, oil and dry herb pens. There are also pens that can be used with a combination of products, such as wax/oil, or dry herb/wax/oil. Vape pens range in price from around $20 to $300.

Wax pens – This type of vape pen is designed for use with “wax”, which is a  concentrated extract of cannabis. Wax vape pens usually have a small chamber with a screen, which protects the wax from direct contact with the heating element.

Oil Pens – Similar to an e-cig these pens use a liquid chamber which can be                   filled with hash oil prepared at home. They can also be used with purchased                   cartridges that are pre-filled.

snoop dogg vapeDry Herb Vaporizer – This style of vape pen uses a heating coil which is specifically designed for dry cannabis flowers. Some dry herb vapes use what’s called a glass dome atomizer, which is great for vaporizing hash or BHO.
